Nemours to Chartrelles

6/10/2012

After a quick run to the market we were getting ready to leave when Powell the Beagle sent an envoy over to find out which direction would be most picturesque. As it turned out we set off together, and spent most of the day sharing the locks, which in addition to good company, helped enormously with J's rope throwing slump today!! They even walked Roxy with Powell at lunch time, and he graciously let her chew on his pigs ear afterwards! Thanks guys!

Looking at the dings, this has got to be the lowest bridge on the route!!
When we got into the Seine we were amazed by the size of the commercial barges, as well as the width and depth of the river. Looking backwards, our lock mates were being monumentally dwarfed in their little rented Penichette, so we weren't that surprised not to see them moored at their planned spot for the night!

A swimmer?! Nutter!

We stopped to refuel (same place as last time, same exhorbitant price!) but their Saturday lad was super helpful, and even gave us a bit of a discount, earning himself a tip which left him looking a bit stunned!

And off we headed, up the wide, deep Seine, with the fish finder only signalling fish and not the shallow bottom! And locking down in these 185m locks is a breeze compared to locking up - although it takes longer!

Looks like a turret is a mustround here!!

The rain started up again, resulting in some inside driving for the first time in a while, and continued throughout the afternoon. We called it a day just before the next lock, where there were probably 4 or 5 septagenarians shouting instructions throughout the mooring procedure, including when to switch off engines(?!), but not a one stuck a hand out to take a rope! It was a good spot though, not far from the shops and despite our fears being on an outer edge pontoon, we were close enough to the lock to ensure low barge speeds and no noticeable wash.
