19/10/12
We were ready to go in good time, but that coincided with
crossing barges right by our mooring, so we held off so as not to get involved,
but it did mean we arrived at every lock just behind the barge and had to wait
a locking sequence.
The first two hours revisited our trip with the Greens, so
you’d think we were on the ball to catch photos of the things we missed last
time, but no! J did not catch good pics of the strange series of statues
through the trees, and the Shetland pony at the lock was playing very hard to
get – might have been the weather!
And the river is running fast – again, thanks to the weather, so we are running against about 2kts of current. Happy, happy engines – fresh oil and running under load?! They purr, I tell you!

Exciting event of the day – at lock 10 (the last of the day)
we were given our own remote control for the 9 locks til the end of the Marne;
our destiny is in our own hands, mwah-ha-ha!
The stop at Ferté is behind an island, where the current
runs strong but we are protected from the wash of any passing boats. A gorgeous English barge, Peridot, was
already there and we were thoroughly questioned as to our provenance and
destination before even being properly moored, but this was followed by an
offer to use their internet if we could pick up their signal, which was very
kind. Not possible to connect but a very generous offer nonetheless. They were
travelling along with the current and were easily topping 8 mph in only
tick-over – bodes well for us on the Rhone!!
